Happy Friday everybody!   It’s Outside lands weekend in San Francisco, so traffic is kinda bad. Maybe I’ll sneak over to Golden Gate Park and listen to some Metallica Master of Puppets.   Anyway, thanks again for reading these weekly updates. My ultimate hope is that my friends find success, however you define it, in all areas of their lives.   ***Here’s a fun contest for my friends on this email list. I’ve been enjoying my Allbirds shoes this week. I’d like to buy a pair of Allbirds to the first person to reply on this (deleted link contest over sorry) with the correct answers. Good luck!   Financial Market Trends: Tensions between North Korea and the USA continue to rise. Another article from Bloomberg Stock market is reacting with a…

Hey folks,   Happy Monday, hope you’re having an awesome week. Here’s an abbreviated weekly report:   Financial Market Trends: Dow closed over a record 22,000 last week, woah. Oil remained flat, ~$50/ barrel Cryptocurrency: My mind is blown, Bitcoin is currently $3,360 per bitcoin. How can it keep climbing?! The Bitcoin fork produced another coin, Bitcoin Cash, which is at $290. Everyone who owned Bitcoin now owns Bitcoin cash for free! Mind blown again. My Ripple XRP hasn’t been doing much these days, sitting at $0.18… time to unload? Wannacry ransomware scammers are making some moves, using the other coin I bought, Monero (which tries to keep all transactions anonymous). Start learning about cryptocurrencies! I'm always down to meet up or talk on the phone about it. Other News:…

Weekly Update July 21, 2017

music
Hey folks,   “Shut up when I’m talking to you!!!!” I’ve always wanted to say that, RIP Chester Bennington (Linkin Park). Anyway, it’s been a while since the last update. I was up in Seattle and have been swamped at work ever since. Here’s this week’s report:   Financial Markets: Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan summed up the current environment perfectly: “It’s almost embarrassing being an American citizen … and listening to the stupid *beep* we have to deal with in this country. The inability to make headway on significant legislation is “holding us back and it is hurting the average American. It isn’t a Republican issue; it is not a Democratic issue.”   The repeal of Obamacare and subsequent delay in tax reforms weren’t a surprise (Meem of…

Curated Stuff: Week of June 26

Hey everybody, Happy Friday. Here’s this week’s report. Financial News I subscribe to Jim Cramer’s Action Alerts plus blog. It’s pretty ok for general financial news and they share their charitable trust portfolio. Here’s this weeks’ report and latest portfolio. If I could go back, I would subscribe to the Motley Fool newsletter instead. Cramer’s team focuses on stability while the Motley Fool seems to look for stocks with potential to run.   Cryptocurrency: Early in the week, the crypto market was volatile. See below snapshot of Monday’s onslaught. The market did recover. Ripple (XRP) is still holding on at 0.25 cents. I’m considering selling some when it hits around 0.30. Looking to buy some Monero (XMR). It’s slowly becoming the currency for the darkweb. It’s a currency focused on…

Curated Stuff: Week of June 19, 2017

Hey gang, I just got back from Yosemite. Hiked a bunch and spent time with family. Couldn't ask for more. This week's update is a bit lighter in content since I didn't have too much time. Finance Another flat week for the markets The new health care bill was released on Thursday. This caused a run up in pharmaceutical/ biotech stocks. Oil hit a year low at $43 a barrel. The Fed conducted it's annual stress test, which tests 34 banks to make sure they have enough capital to endure any economic downturn.  Cryptocurrency The market is volatile and unregulated, so things like the Ethereum flash crash can happen. Yowza. I'm still a believer in the cryptocurrency space. This week my work sent a widely distributed email talking about the…

Mostly Me: I traveled to Chicago for the ASCO Oncology conference. Trip report here. Also Portland trip report here.   Financial News Markets went sideways this week (DOW 21,384 (+7% since Jan 2017); S&P 2,433 (+8% since Jan 2017); NASDAQ 6,151 (+13% since Jan 2017) with technology stocks continuing their decline. Oil trended lower to $45/ barrel (2013 $27/ barrel, 2008 $145/ barrel), and Gold declined a bit to $1253/ounce. The Fed finally raised interest rates on Wednesday +0.25% to 1.25%. What does this mean? Not much, besides boosting Finance/ Bank stocks as they make more money with higher rates.…

Curated Stuff: Week of May 15

Week in a nutshell
Hi folks, Hope you are having a great weekend. Maybe you are having a house warming party, playing tennis, or working on your wedding side hustle. Whatever it is, I wish you an inspiring and energy filled week ahead. The long weekend up in Portland was great, lots to do and eat in the city. I also ended up in Napa for my department's overnight offsite. Now it's back to the grind, but at least the grind will make us sharper! Finance On Wednesday, markets took it's biggest dive since September 2016, based on some political instability (Investigative committee formed to review Trump's relationships w/ Russia, fallout from firing FBI director Comey, etc). With all of these issues, it will be a bit harder for the President to work on many…

Curated Stuff: Week of May 8

Week in a nutshell
Hello from rainy Portland, home of giant artisan meat stuffed cheesy biscuits, sour fruity craft coffee and super bitter over hopped beer. Finance The cryptocurrency market is still on fire. Bitcoin is near all time highs and Ripple is still climbing. Of course this is a very speculative, risky investment. Consensus 2017 is expected to bring further Ripple news to the industry (specifically the lock up), so watch out for major moves May 22-24. Is it time to buy or sell? Do the opposite of what I do. [caption id="attachment_509" align="alignnone" width="931"] Ripple is on a tear[/caption] The DOW and S&P didn't do much this week Macron won the French elections President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey Improving near-term sentiment in the oil markets Sluggish macro data and weak earnings…

Curated Stuff: Week of May 1st

Week in a nutshell
Hello! Thought I'd create a weekly curated list of things I've learned. It's meant to be educational, brief, and encouraging. I know I've been hiding in a cave the last few years, so this is also my feeble attempt to keep in touch. Jon Finances Markets remained relatively flat with the DOW at 21,006 and the S&P 500 at 2,399. Tech reported earnings, including Facebook and Apple.  Oil dipped to new lows for the year based on oversupply and low demand The new American Health Care Act of 2017 made its way to the the Senate Keep an eye on the proposed Tax Plan Federal Reserve is planning a June interest rate hike French Elections are this weekend. "Polls" say it's Macron for the win I started learning about cryptocurrency and the underlying blockchain technology of decentralized…
